“I did, so can YOU”: a veteran filmed advice for people with amputations
Oleksandr Tereshchenko, a veteran of the russian-Ukrainian war from Mykolaiv, together with like-minded people, filmed 14 video tips for people with amputations as part of the project I Did, so can YOU! The videos are about how to take care of yourself in everyday life without arms or legs.
The author of the project, who lost his arms while defending the country, told Ukrinform.
“Within the project, we managed to shoot 14 video tips (videos). Among them: “How to Make a Bed,” “How to Brush Your Teeth,” “How to Shave,” “How to Manage the Toilet,” “How to Shower Yourself,” “How to Put Eye Shadow,” “How to Make Coffee Without a Prosthesis,” “How to Make Breakfast with a Prosthesis,” “How to Drive a Car Without Hands,” and a number of others,” Tereshchenko says.
According to him, nine videos were made under a grant funded by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine (there were supposed to be 12 in total), and five more were made on the basis of partnership.
In almost all of the videos, Oleksandr stars himself, because he understands better than anyone else how important it is for a person without limbs to cope without assistance.
So far, eight video tips have been posted on the project’s YouTube channel
“We gradually upload the remaining ones once every two weeks to keep the audience interested. We have also produced six electronic guides to the videos out of the 12 provided by the grant. In addition, we managed to record three podcasts on social adaptation after severe injuries,” the veteran added.
It is worth noting that the “I did, so can YOU” project was funded with the support of the US Embassy. It has now been suspended along with other important veteran projects. But Tereshchenko and his team are not giving up and hope for continued support.
“We are currently trying to apply to Ukrainian and European grantmakers. It’s not even about money. First of all, it concerns the dissemination of the content already produced so that more people who can benefit from it can learn about this project,” Tereshchenko added.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Oleksandr Tereshchenko, a veteran of the russian-Ukrainian war from Mykolaiv, received a grant from the US Embassy to implement the project “I did, so can YOU” aimed at social adaptation of people with amputations. The project involved the production of 12 films with video tips on various everyday topics and 12 podcasts on social adaptation.
These are step-by-step instructions for veterans with amputated limbs on how to take care of themselves and do everything that any person does. For example, how to dress and cook their own food without using their hands, how to properly equip a toilet so that they can go there without assistance, etc.
